This is a picture of Shayne, the miracle whom I tracked into twice and found. The other picture is the truck we've been driving for the last 3 months. Talk about an awesome truck to drive, brand span-ken new off the boat right when i got called as an Assistant. I've loved almost every min of the last 3 months! So much to be grateful and many memories to reflect back on the rest of my life.

Quick update for me is that General conference was absolutly amazing! I can't believe it's the last one I'll ever have in Hawaii as a missionary! But what better way to spend it then in the home with President and Sister Dalton. It was so spiritual, and with the knowledge I now have it was magnificent. I get what they are trying to convey and instill in the hearts of the members. I understand the vocabulary and etc. So know that I'm doing fantastic! Tomorrow we'll be doing the 1 day training for the entire mission but broken into different groups That way in 4 days of the same training we can train the entire mission. It's on the 8 Fundamental principles of how to become a better teacher. I remember when they did this over a year and a half ago. haha now I'm the one training. What a neat experience once again that I get. I'm still learning so much. Right now I'm focusing on being consistent in the love for others
It was quite rewarding as a few missionaries called me today after general conference sharing how what I had taught them on there exchange really has set there mission and they were able to really understand General Conference at a deeper level. What better music could a red head hear.
love you tons
Your fav redheaded son
Elder Big Red (Gardner) as Uncle John (President Dalton) would say haha

Where do I even try to begin!? haha but I'll do my best to recap you on the last few weeks. As you know Elder Woodfield and I created our transfer plan of the Elders we're going to go with. We're focusing on the 6 months and younger ones to get them started on the right note. We haven't gone on to many exchanges due to Zone Conference this last week. But we at least manage to go to their nightly planning.
Zone Conference has been absolutely amazing! I've now given the same training 4 times in a row and will be doing it another 3 more times this coming week. But it's such a spiritual high all the time. Plus I'm with the some awesome Elders all the time not to mention Pres and Sister Dalton. Zone Conference usually lasts around from 8:00- 2:00 or 10:00 to 4:00. Elder Menlove and Coffin are training on the importance of Time management and planning effectively. It's a way sick training! Elder Menlove has a person come up and we list off what we do in a day. So he puts a bunch of tennis balls in a container till it's full and asks everyone if it is this full? ...Nope.... then we continue to list things we do in a day and he puts now marbles inside and asks is it full? ...Nope... Then we list even more stuff and pulls out air soft bb's and pours them in. So by now its packed full! But he still says its not full and pours a big water bottle to fill it all up. and says our day is not full until we have the Doctrine of Christ instilled in every planned activity we go to in building the kingdom of God. Now it's full and we can't accomplish this unless we have effective planning by first putting in our biggest priorities. It's Training more in detail but it's fantastic! It grabs everyone attention.
Then Sister Dalton gives a wonderful talk. She called all her son's and son in law's and asked them how the mission has affected the rest of there life. So it was great to hear how all these skills learned will affect us in the next life after our mission. I can already see it, like for one thing I'm not scared to talk to everyone or anyone. My confidence has climbed that's for sure. Not that I'm thinking about it but I won't be scared to talk to a random girl when I get home if you know what I mean haha. Anyways everything directly relates in being able to have a successful future! That's a whole other email though. So Sister Daltons talk is fantastic!
After which we have lunch and then I train on how to invite people. We need to work on making direct invitations. or giving an invitation out of no where and scaring their investigators. So my title is called " Commitment Is The Thread by Which Covenants are Woven." I first start by sharing why invitations are important and how it fulfills our purpose as a missionary. But my training is more based on how we can make them more effective. So I show them 3 examples of how most missionaries invite. 2 are horrible examples and 1 is perfect. The first one is Elder Woodfield trying to get me to eat some Pie but he's way hesitant, mumbles. Double invites, lack of confidence etc... then we discuss why is this a bad example. Then we relate it to when we invite our investigators and how they feel when we present the gospel this way. Next is when Elder Menlove comes into the room and just directly asks if I want some pie. and with out me answering he throws the pie into me face having it go every where. and we relate it to how sometimes when we teach and at the end of the lesson we randomly ask them to get baptized out of no where and it comes unexpected like a pie in the face and they don't enjoy it nor want more. The 3rd example is when I'm at Pres Dalton's house and they say" wait just one second and Elder Menlove, Coffin, and Woodfield leave and in a matter of seconds set the table, with a plate of pie, tucking a napkin in my shirt, and asking me if I'd please eat some pie. and I enjoy it and want more. It's pretty funny! I so want to show you the video, it makes it all the better. But then I show an example how we can prepare our investigators for our invitations by the commitment triangle which you'll find on the paper in the attachment. It's a pretty funny training.

Elder Woodfield trains on the Power of One that if every active member in Hawaii was to refer just one friend that 5 1/2 stakes would be baptized this coming year.
Pres Dalton gives a money talk on the power of obedience which gets me every time!
It's such a blessing to be around such an amazing leader and learn from him so much. He's so well rounded in every which way. I just hope I can get everything out of this experience I can. I've learned so much about leadership.
Also on a side note that came to mind. I've been able to be around Elder Melvill who's in Grandma and Grandpa Gividen's ward. He's way tight and will probably be a future AP and for sure a Zone leader. He's awesome. We'll I pretty much love me life! I'm absolutely exhausted but satisfied! I've seen some amazing miracles and a lot of new investigators between Elder Woodfield and I. Our goal is to find 2 new investigators every exchange, and work there butt off. I got to see a few members from Ka'u today when I was on the big island. I just flew back earlier this evening. It was so exciting! I can't wait to go back to Ka'u!!!! All I did was talk about ka'u with the Elders that are serving there and caught up on everything. Lesli Smith my first Convert is the Primary President right now haha she's so solid. Gone through the temple and everything.
We'll my mind is blank and I got to go to help the other Elders with numbers tonight! love you tons!

We got a phone call this last week from Flint's Mission President. It was a wonderful call. He is making him an AP staring this Tuesday. In that Mission they have 2 sets of AP's. The first set is in the Mission Office and helps the President. The second set is called Traveling AP's which is what Flint was called to do. He and His companion will travel around the whole mission doing training in splits to help reach a higher level of missionary work. He will fly out every Sunday Night to an area/Island work with that area and fly home (home will be in a double wide trailer with the other AP's across the street from the Mission Office) Friday night. Sunday he will attend church with the other AP's in Honolulu and then fly out again Sunday night to another area. The Mission President said that it was a very rigorous schedule and he will be exhausted. He will see all of the Hawaiian Islands. He was so nice he said Flint had the respect of all the Elders in the Mission and he only sends the best of the best. So as parents we are grateful for his dedication to the Lord.
Aloha!
It's been amazing to see how far Nisha has come from when I first met her now that she is Baptized. She truly has a completely different spirit about her! All her friends keep asking us, "what did you do to her, she's so open, happy, and engaging." And because of this great example she's portraying, She's now brought 5 of her friends to be actively taught by us missionaries. 2 of them have a baptismal date. What a person I'll never forget, along with the elect, "ayuko Takabayashi" She was a great baptism to finish the transfer.

I just know that I'm having the time of my life and feeling the most accomplished. Why?...I finally understand what it means to forget myself completely and put it into action. To have a vision and complete it. To be a leader who thinks nothing else then those I have stewardship over. It's so so true exactly as christ said, For whosoever will save his life shall LOSE it: and whosoever will LOSE his life for my sake shall find it. But we must have this type of attitude. D&C 64:34 Behold, the Lord arequireth the bheart and a cwilling mind; and the willing and dobedient shalleeat the good of the land of Zion in these last days.
I have a hard time explaining what i mean without actually going through it. But Boy and I learning a ton! and Loving life. I sure enjoyed my last week.

Yup so I got transfer over here in Makakilo zone in the area of Kapolei. I can never remember exactly what I want to say once I sit down at the computer. So actually im in a tri-companionship on a special assignment with one of the elders I'm with. I'm still the senior zone leader, the other zone leader is Elder Garen Routt who lives in Provo Utah. Apparently he was best friends with JC Hatch who i played football with and then he also lived next to Jessica Bonati before she move to Provo haha. What a small world! it's been great, he's awesome and we've had a fantastic week with each other. actually this has been one of the best weeks I've had in a while! Elder Routt is just about to hit his year mark. My other companion has been out 7 months and he's from Western Samoa and lived back and forth also in New Zealand.
My health and looks are marvolous. my facial hair is another story haha.

Aloha Everyone,
What a week it has been for Elder Davies and I. It couldn't of ended any better with one of the most spiritual baptisms I've ever been apart of. It has not just affected the now new member but the entire ward and all of her friends and family. I've never seen so many big tough boys be touched so strongly by the spirit. Almost the entire ward came together in support of the baptism and the desire to do missionary work spreading like a wild fire throughout the ward. Not to mention this weekend and is now the last week for Elder Davies as he now starts his new chapter in his life. Luckily I still have a year to go and hope to become the incredible missionary he has become who has influenced not only and entire ward as he has the last 6 months but all the islands of Hawaii. He has been an example to many, and I find myself quite fortunate to have been able to serve by him day after day the last 4 1/2 months! Just one of those people that enter into your life and leave an endless mark for the better. I know myself and the ward that he will be greatly missed and remembered in our hearts forever.
Love, Elder Gardner

Aloha everyone,
What a week it has been for Elder Davies and I. It's hard for me to gather my thoughts on what to say each week cause i can't even remember what happened just a couple days ago. Everyday is pack with something that wasn't in our plans. I guess that's just preparing me for the future, at least that's what I hear from parents and families.
I never realized how much goes into the church and what the leadership has for responsibilities to take care of. I get them a lot more credit now as I've been working hand in hand with Bishops, Stake Presidents and Area Seventies. Would never have thought before my mission I'd be accounting with and Area Seventy. But besides the point, there really is a lot of sacrifice and love that is put into every activity, event, and just the weekly Sacrament meeting. Just a thought I was pondering about. The organization of the church blows me away. You know the church is true when you can get a 19-25 year old boy to get up at 5:00 a.m. Go to meetings and church till 2 in the afternoon and then get back to work the rest of the day. Testimony for sure.
Zone Conference was this week! I never realized how much went into a zone conference especially when it's off island. There always a spiritual boost that keeps the fire going. Elder Davies and I trained on the importance of Following up on all commitments. So we did a demonstration by pulling up 2 Elders in front and gave both a waffle cone and a big scoop of Ice Cream symbolizing the commitment we gave then. Then 1 of the Elders we allowed them to eat there Ice cream because we followed up with them, while the other one we said all you could do is watch your Ice cream melt, not only that we got an advisory tool by blowing a heater on it because He will do all he can to prevent the work from progressing. It ended up being a good way to show everyone the importance of following up so they can enjoy ice cream, or the blessing that come from keeping there commitments. It was over all a great Zone conference as they always are. Can't believe that the next one will be for Christmas.
On the other hand we had an awesome week as out baptism date from Sept 17 is looking really solid! We're stoked, as Elder Davies will have his last baptism on his last weekend before he goes home with a super solid investigator who wants him to baptize her. What a way to end the mission with a bang! We're really looking forward for this coming Saturday.
Thanks for everything, Love Elder Gardner!

Aloha everyone.
We had one of our more successful week. We have been working so hard the last 5 weeks or more and haven't seen any success. But as we always do we just keep working, and then all it takes is last week a member who saw an missionary opportunity came and got us and introduced us to his friend and invited him to meet with us this last week. As a result we had one of the most spiritual lessons. These are the moments that make the gospel worth it. When you teach someone who is so humble and is wanting to keep commitments. As of right now we have a baptismal date Sept 17, 2011. The Last Sunday for my companion Elder Davies. Just that lesson alone made all that hard work worth it. It seems to be that way with life. We seem to go through so much and then the blessing comes. Elder Davies always says, "live for the moments that make the gospel worth it." What a true statement.
Thanks for all the support!

Aloha Everyone,
This week was quite the exhausting week, with many unexpected events that happened. It first started out early in the week with a missionary in the zone. He was feeling really sick and went into the doctors. Which later turned to him being rushed to the E.R. and several tests where taken. And I learned that if your not about to die they take for ever to take care of your needs. Maybe it was just that night but he had many tests and then later that night around 1:00 am he had his appendix taken out. It was quite funny though cause there was no one in the hospital really with this nurse testing him and the Elder asked her how many have tried to run away from the hospital and she replied," How may have tried or Succeeded?" and we asked succeeded, and she replied back that 3 have successfully succeeded. Right then the Elder said," It's about to be FOUR!" while trying to sit up with all these cords attached to him. It was the funniest thing I'd seen in a long time. Plus it was late and by then everything is funny. So that is how the start of my week happened.
I love my mission though! I've learned so much! Have an awesome week

Aloha everyone,
I just have a short story to share with you this week from a member and how the gospel has changed there son's life. There son had been struggling with dyslexia his entire life in school even till he reached in high school. And the father shared with us how they tried multiple programs to help him, but there wasn't any direct results from there efforts. But as the father and mother prayed together to see what they could do, they felt a strong impression on something so simple. That they need to read the Book of Mormon as a family every day. Something so simple and something we're all asked to do. Yet this time the family gained an added measure of strength with the impression they felt. And every sense then they haven't missed a morning where they gather together to read as a family. They mentioned that it definitely wasn't easy or got a lot read at times but they always had family scripture. After months had passed the teacher of the son approached the family to share with them that she doesn't know how but there son has improved drastically in his ability to write, read, and understand the material given in class. Just a small and simple thing that seems to always bring great things to passed.
I just have to say I absolutely love reading the Book of Mormon, I always feel the spirit and then there is always something that stands out to me that I can work on that day in becoming what God wants me to be or a lesson I need to learn. It seems so simple, but all of us know who have put it as a priority it some how blesses us in our unique way.
I love you all, thanks for all the support and love.
Red head,

We had a touching experience with the recent baptism we had last
Friday. As this passed week we had a follow up lesson with her about
how the Holy Ghost works within us. Toward the end of the mission she
shared with us something she recognized as the Light of Christ that
prepared her toward baptism. She shared how a friend has invited her
to stay in the mainland this passed spring and summer. At first she
was stoked to go but afterward she shared how she had this distinct
feeling that she wasn't suppose to go. That something was resisting
her to go with her friend. As a result she followed the prompting and
expressed to her friend that she wouldn't be going with her but will
rather stay back in Hawaii. Well just that next week she met Two new
friends through soccer who are apart of the singles branch we cover.
To make a long story short, those two friend became the pivoting point
of her life as they invited her to listen to the missionaries, and she
now is one of the most recent converts of the church who couldn't be
happier. The exciting part of this all is that she recognized how God
paved the path for her because she listen to the spirit and stayed in
Hawaii. No one knows what would of happened if she went, but we do
know what would of happened if she stayed.
When I think of missionary work I like to refer to 1 Nephi 8:12-16.
Lehi is a great example of the attitude toward missionary work. In vrs
12 just think of how wonderful the gospel has been in your life and
how it has shaped you. We all have those moments to look back on when
we have partaken the most sweet, the most white, and most desirable
fruit above all other. Whether it was the influence of the atonement
in our life, or just that simple moment in the room feeling the spirit
by a sincere prayer.
But I love the first thing Lehi does after he partakes of the
fruit, that he casts his eyes around for his family. He looks for
missionary opportunities around him knowing that we are all brothers
and sisters under God who is are loving heavenly father. That as it
states in vrs 14 "they stood as if they knew not whither they should
go." I've really come to find on my mission and as I look back when I
was in Utah that there really are people who want a better life but
don't know where to go to find it. Yet the cool thing is that we do
and we can be that tool in God's hands and answers to searching
prayers.
How do we do that? Lehi once again shows how in vrs 15 as he
beckons with a loud voice to come and partake of the fruit. Just by
simple invites to come to church, a family home evening, a dinner to
show we are normal, or ward activities. It's by small and simple
things that brings great things to pass. Just as vrs 16 states as they
came and partook of the most desirable fruit!
Truly missionary work has brought the greatest happiness in my
life because i've learned the greatest joy come from the success of
others. What better success can come into a person's life then the
gospel of Jesus Christ and the comfort to know God's perfect plan! I
love all of you and I"m grateful to have seen how the gospel truly
does bless families as we live faithful to what God asks us.

Aloha Everyone,
Sorry about the last week of having no email. My companion and I
had a meeting in Oahu that lasted all day. But I'll recap on what's
happened the last 2 weeks in Maui for us. Last week we had our zone
conference which I like to look forward to cause afterwards I always
have this extra boost to work that much harder or to work on something
I can improve on. But this time it was a little different as now
instead of me recieving the training I was giving the training to 25
other missionaries. It's crazy to think how fast time has flown by as
I feel like it was only yesterday when I remember my very first zone
conference and to compare how I used to think to now. But I do look
forward to the opportunity to help others, as I have found the
greatest happiness comes from the success of others. Its so cool to
see a missionary step out of old habbits or take a step out of the
comfort level there used to and watch them grow and flourish into a
confident missionary with a purpose. Nothing can beat that.
Then this passed week we had an incredible baptism in the singles
ward who has been taught for quite a while now but couldn't ever
commit to a date. She's been the hardest person I've ever had to
teach, but those make the best baptisms cause of all the sweat, tears
and prayers that go into it. Hopefully the picture I sent will be
posted to see.
Also this passed week we had a lesson with our investigator who
was the one who beared his testimony in fast and testimony meeting and
then later told us he wanted to be baptized as soon as possible. Well
he cancelled a few lessons and we started to doubt his sincerity. Then
he kept pushing the date back until all his family could be there
which would of been at least a month if not longer. My companion and I
were pretty nervous cause this is what he did last time and by the
time the date came he dropped last min. We didn't want him to loose
the feelings he had shared with us and his softened heart.
Yet he called us up on wed and wanted to meet as soon as he got
off work. So we did so and he bought us some lunch and we just talk
story to gain a mutal relationship and then began the lesson on the
Plan of Salvation as he had some questions referring to it. As it
comes down to it. He really grasped the concept and lightbulbs were
flashing left and right. By the end of the lesson he was so determined
to get baptized as soon as possible before the advesary could take his
turn and make an effect. So with out hessitation he scheduled this
coming friday to get baptized with or with out his family. He just
wants to do it.
Well to make this long story longer and get to the point. We got a
call yesterday being sunday and it was him stating how he is now on
the Big Island where his wife was working for the week and went to
church there. He then asked for the approval if he could just get
baptized over there sense his family was mostly with him; and the rest
is history. He ended up flying over there last min and then getting
baptized. For us and the history with him it was a miracle before our
face and exciting moment for my companion and I. As now latter today
we'll be meeting with him again to have him share his experience of
being baptized. So that's the major updates for this week. Thanks for
all you do.

Aloha Everyone!
Next we find out unexpectedly that there was a need for a baptismal interview on the island of Hawaii. At first Pres Dalton was going to fly over this passed Friday but that all changed as we cheerfully suggested on how we can do it for him by taking the ferry over to Lanai, so he wouldn't have to take the time out of his busy day. Well it worked he gave us the permission and this passed Friday as well we got to go to Lanai. The last Elders that have touched that Island has been around 5 years. Right now there is a Senior couple who go over ever other week. So that was a once in a life opportunity as a ward missionary gave us a tour around the whole island after the baptism in the ocean. The Tour only took less then a half a day because of how small the island is.
Every week just seems to have it's unique flavor. Especially this week sense a lot happened in the space of 7 days. I'll see if I have time to write all that I want.
On Wed. Elder Davies and I went to Molokai. We ended up Leaving at 5:45a.m. for the day to spend with the missionaries there. It was quite the experience, more toward the boat ride. We heard a lot about how horrible it can be with the huge swells but luckily we went in the morning before the wind had a chance to pick up. Still though it was an exciting ride, especially for a "missionary" who can't even touch the sand nor ocean.
So we sat on top of the boat where their is a good view and open air to the endless ocean, and being surrounded by 3 different Islands. At first everyone went on top, where it was full of people. But that all changed when we hit the channel that goes between the islands and it gets really rough.
Rough enough to the point where when the boat hit the swells waves would come hurling over and on top of the boat. Just after that first wave the entire top cleared in a hurry down below were it's enclosed. Elder Davies and I along with only 2-3 people stayed on top. We couldn't help but laugh between each other as we took every wave as an opportunity to touch the ocean! Not to many missionaries get to take a boat over the Ocean, so we took all we could get. This is the highlight of missionary work ha. We didn't get to wet but after we dried we had salt all over us. Once again a day I won't forget.
I was really grateful for the opportunity to be able to work with the young missionaries to be that inspiration they need as they are continuing to grow. That's what made the difference for me in my mission as I got to see a whole new level & experience through the example of other missionaries! namely Elder Killian, Bigg's and now to add to the list Elder Davies.
The picture I sent is the bed I got to sleep on when on the exchange as I just put together a makeshift bed out of chairs. It didn't work out so well as every time I shifted around the chairs squeaked across the hard wood floor plus we had to wake up at 4:00 the next morning to catch the early boat ride home.
The Tour only took less then a half a day because of how small the island is.
Then to seal the deal on this passed Sunday as it was fast and testimony meeting at the very end of the meeting a gentleman walked up to bear his testimony. Elder Davies and I immidelty turned to one another as we both felt that he was a Non member bearing his testimony. He then goes on the share how God has really soften his heart and his desire to be more apart of the church has strengthen.
After the meeting ended to make a long story short we leave to go to the singles ward and we get a call from the 1st counselor in the bishopric on how this gentleman who bore his testimony wants to be baptized as soon as possible before the advisory takes over. So we rushed back, interview him, he had already been taught everything a year ago so he passed with flying colors and he wants to be baptized this coming Saturday. So this week was packed with experiences that will never be erased. I don't know if I can keep up these incredible weeks one right after another. I've never been so busy in my life and can't believe it's Monday again to write my weekly email. But I love it and I feel satisfied, what else can I ask for.

Aloha Everyone!
OK so I know I keep saying different weeks surpass others, But this week was the all mighty! Tuesday we had our mission tour where All the missionaries in Maui flew to the Big Island to receive one of the greatest trainings I'll ever hear in my life. Elder Davies and I though flew earlier in the morning around 5:00 A.M. to have a separate meeting of all the Zone Leaders with Elder Pearson who's one out of the 6 General Authorities over the missionary work. It was absolutely mind blowing. In all we were trained 9:00 A.M. Till 4:30 P.M. with an hour break for lunch. I've never had such a clarity in my mind and understanding of the gospel. He trained us in so many aspects that It would take hours to type all that I learned. All I know is that my testimony has been edified by the spirit to greater degree that i had ever anticipated in my life. He shared things that will ever change my life in how I carry myself and how to be successful in the big picture. I just wish I could somehow share it will all. And then he shared that He'll be giving a 1 min prayer in the next general conference as well.
Then to add upon that incredible day is that as a mission we reached our Vision 100. The last time we hit that goal was last year in May. It was so incredibly close that we thought for sure we would hit 99. Yet we had some incredible miracles placed in our hands were we finished now in May at 101 Baptisms. People who have entered the covenant and received one of God's greatest gifts. That being the "Holy Ghost." What a remarkable experience. I'm so grateful for this opportunity to be on a mission serving the Lord and witness for myself His marvelous work and glory.
I love you all and thanks for all the wonderful letters and support you share with me.
Love, Elder Gardner

Aloha Everyone
What an incredible insane busy life I have now haha. So Maui is quite the place, I've already seen most of the island because of being a ZL and doing a lot of work and little misc assignments. My companion is Elder Davies from Salt Lake Utah. He's the bomb and we have had an awesome week so far. We have a complete blast while working hard. He's a great missionary who can really teach and connect with those he comes in contact. He's been out now for 21 months. I really feel blessed to have another incredible companion who wants to finish his mission really strong. He's been ZL for a year now, so he knows what he's doing and I can tell i'm going to learn a ton. He's super bold in a good way and we'll see what's going to happen now in the future. But I know it's going to be grand.
We live in a pad with 2 other elders as well and that's been fun. Everything has its pro's and con's whether it be a 2 man pad or a 4 man pad. I'm used to either one.
The zone I'm in covers the Island of Maui, Molokai, and Lanai. It's the biggest Zone in the mission, so that will be interesting. Next week We'll be taking the farry to Molokai to train the missionaries over there and then we go to the Big Island for training this week. Then Oahu to get trained by Pres Dalton. So the next few weeks I'll be all over Hawaii.
